Abstract
An open-air, three-electrode corona streamer counter with a preamplification gap has been utilized for detecting weakly ionizing beta rays. The effect of temperature on the beta particle corona counter performance is studied. A theoretical model is used to study the effect of temperature on counter operating voltage and beta-particle-triggered corona pulse characteristics. The effects on the counter energy response are explained. A compensation method for the errors due to temperature effects is suggested. All the theoretical findings were confirmed by experiments
