Abstract
This paper presents an extensive investigation related to starting transient performance characteristics of reluctance motors with and without terminal capacitors in the presence of feeder impedance. Optimal capacitance value has been selected according to the machine parameters. The resulting nonlinear differential equations describing the supply source impedance, shunt compensator and the reluctance motor were then put in a state variable form, and conveniently solved numerically using the Runge-Kutta method of numerical integration. Experimental verification of the results were conducted on a proposed solid steel rotor. The employed stator is that of a 3-phase, 1/3 hp, 220/380 volt, 50 Hz squirrel cage induction motor. Simulation results are reported and proved to yield good agreement when compared with the relevant experimental values
