Abstract
Practical synchronous machines have two main complicating features which make the effective application of field orientated control methods to these machines difficult. These are saturation and the presence of damper windings. This paper looks at a prototype drive both with and without dampers in order to show the benefits that can be obtained in terms of dynamic performance with dampers and the method of modelling the damper currents to allow their inclusion within the field orientated controller
