Abstract :
The authors present measured characteristics for a prototype motor of static torque versus angular position for various levels of current, which demonstrate the high electromechanical torque that may be achieved in a machine of the VRPM type. Secondly, a design method is introduced and briefly described, that enables the proportions of the stator teeth, air-gap, and rotor magnets, to be approximately optimised for maximum torque. Additionally, design comparisons are briefly made with machines of alternative construction, on the hypothetical basis of an equal level of torque production
