Abstract
The finite-element method has been used to investigate aspects of damper cage design in large, salient pole synchronous machines. In particular, iron and damper bar losses have been calculated using both magnetodynamic and time-stepping formulations. The complex flux density waveforms that they predict are far from those assumed in more conventional analyses and from the simple, uni-directional sine wave used to measure specific iron loss in sample laminations
