Abstract
The author presents a comparison of losses and efficiency between synchronous generators with conventional field windings to those with low and high temperature superconducting field windings, as well as break-even power ratings for an HTS generator. Consideration is given to generators with a rotating armature and outside stationary field winding, (`inside-out design´). In order to facilitate the removal of the large generated currents from the rotating armature of the inside-out machine, a rotating transformer is considered
