Abstract :
Oscillations in open-loop DC-to-DC converters using bipolar junction transistor (BJT) switches due to modulation of the turn-off delay by the switch current are investigated. Simulations using a piecewise-linear equivalent circuit and a simple linear relationship between turn-off delay and switch current are used to predict the amplitude and frequency of the waveforms of inductor current and output voltage. The results of experimental measurements, time-domain simulations, and small-signal modeling all agree well.
