Abstract :
Begins with a description of a batch polymerization process and examples of linear control of the process for two different batch lengths. A means of estimating online the heat release profile of the reactor contents, and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the reactor, is developed. A gray-box model of the polymerization process is then presented and the fit of this model to the estimated heat release and heat transfer coefficient profiles is shown. Finally, a nonlinear controller is developed based on the gray-box model and the result of using the nonlinear controller is presented
