Abstract
The measure of economic worth should be a development´s net money flow, plus the value of all the options that it gives one to generate other money flows. These options are especially important in advanced manufacturing. Technologies and techniques that enhance the flexibility of a firm´s manufacturing operations are an important source of options. And the fact that these technologies are applied in conditions of great uncertainty means that their successful exploitation needs such options. At present, the ability to use quantitative models to understand growth options is limited, and one has to rely on more informal lines of reasoning
