Abstract :
While many unionized environments avoid employing any system that exams their members´ individual performances Intersil Corporation, a leading manufacturer of hi-technology semiconductors, broke the norm in its self-managed workforce, subsequently, implementing a performance management system. The system was designed to create a simple tool that provided each hourly operator with accurate and timely feedback with respect to communication, initiative, job knowledge, quality, teamwork and work ethic. All of these characteristics are inherent qualities of an effective workforce, especially one where self-directed work teams govern the flow of production. The computerized performance review system was used to select training and employment development activities supportive of the company´s growth and profitability goals. The system was used to document individual performance patterns for continuous improvements
