Abstract
Leaky surface acoustic wave velocity (V LSAW) and attenuation profiles across the diameters of cladded glass fibers or fiber preforms are presented. Optical fibers with different dopants, such as GeO2, F, B2O3, etc., and dopant concentrations have been investigated. The role of acoustic profiles across the core and cladding regions in the design of optical fibers for several device applications is outlined. By comparing V LSAW profiles with the corresponding optical refractive index profile, n , the relation between ΔV LSAW/V LSAW and Δn /n is obtained for several dopants. Potential applications of cylindrical glass rods with graded acoustic-velocity profiles are also discussed
