Abstract :
The design and operation of transmission and reflective artificial index grating (AIG) diffractive optical elements (DOE) has been reviewed. The practical difficulties in the use of transmission AIGs have been pointed out. Two reflective AIG elements have been fabricated. A deflector showing 84% diffraction efficiency, and a cylindrical lens with η=70%. Both elements have been characterised and good agreement between theoretical design and implementation has been found. The principle of phase synthesis using modulated microstructures appears to be of general validity
