  • Abstract
The effective-index modulation profiles of waveguide diffraction gratings with maximized first-order efficiency are applied to construct gradient-thickness diffractive waveguide lenses with improved overall efficiency. A high-numerical-aperture lens contains regions with significantly different structures. Such lenses are analyzed with the thin grating decomposition method
