Abstract
A novel approach is presented to accurately estimate the resonant features of a multi-patch-backscatter based chipless RFID tag. Here an ultra wideband impulsed radar (UWB-IR) based reading architecture is used where the received backscatter is analyzed in the time domain. Through simulations it is shown that the information-carrying component of the backscatter is contained in the antenna mode. The new method does not rely on calibration tags for operation and has a greater degree of freedom in the orientation of tags with respect to a reader.
