The history, status and future development of 500 kV XLPE cables are described in terms of innovations in cable manufacturing technology. Consequent improvements in insulation design stress and cable life exponents, technical characteristics of 500 kV XLPE circuits in service and those now in the process of installation, and aspects of reduced insulation design are discussed
