Abstract
This paper describes work done to develop an intelligent decision support system and associated display for marine pilots. This system is based around the concept of an electronic chart with DGPS positioning and provides real time advice to pilots and ships masters in confined port approach areas. The system is intended to demonstrate how advanced Electronic Chart equipment can provide added value to ship safety in restricted waters. The questions that had to be resolved in developing an interface to such a system may provide some stimulus to those involved in the design of coastal navigation systems
