Abstract :
A method for electronic scanning in acoustic microscopy and ultrasonic imaging is described. A wedge transducer is used to illuminate a standard cylindrical lens. As the resonant frequency of the transducer varies with position, it is possible to sweep the focal spot down the line by changing the frequency. A typical acoustic image is given as well as detailed considerations on the resolution of the device. Experimental results on reflection from a scattering object indicate that the effective excitation width in the transducer is the main effect controlling the resolution
