  • Abstract
The recent issue of the Back-up Requirements for ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems) by IMO (International Maritime Organization) is an important step in the global adoption of electronic charts as a legal alternative to the paper chart. This paper has outlined the advantages and disadvantages of some of the suggested arrangements for back-up and has attempted to identify which solutions will meet the new IMO requirements. Over a period of some years we can expect some convergence in the specific solutions that are used for back-up, particularly in the context of integrated bridges for newly built vessels. These are likely to include the use of a second ECDIS or a chart radar, probably through the concept of multi-function displays. Vessels retro-fitted with ECDIS are likely to see more diverse back-up arrangements. Whilst much emphasis has been put on the equipment standards for back-up it is essential that the mariner is properly trained in preparing for and coping with ECDIS failure
