Abstract
One of the first potential uses of ATM cell-switching is in large enterprise-wide private networks. ATM provides greater flexibility in the utilisation of network resources. The paper describes, firstly, an architecture and operational mode for large private ATM networks based upon virtual path connections. Secondly, it discusses various performance oriented traffic control mechanisms and thirdly, it presents results obtained to date relating to an investigation into the bandwidth allocation strategies and priority control algorithms
