Abstract
Seen as the earliest example of broadband networks, MANs (metropolitan area networks) are already being installed in many countries, including a commercial MAN network by BT in the UK. Such networks give users access to the new generation of broadband technology, and high speed data services such as SMDS (switched multimegabit data service) and CBDS (connectionless broadband data service). There will be a requirement for the current MAN networks to interwork with forthcoming ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) trials, and then the fully fledged ATM network
