Abstract
The asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is usually considered within the context of broadband networks and services. The paper examines the use of ATM in developing a service independent network in the Asia-Pacific region, where local infrastructure tends to support limited capacity. A prime motivation is that ATM avoids the need to establish multiple overlay networks to support voice, data, and video traffic requirements. The development of an ATM network node and an ATM link test unit are described
