Safe and effective mobility in Europe-the contribution of the PROMETHEUS programme

The author describes the approach of the PROMETHEUS programme, which started in 1986 by an initiative of the automotive industry in the framework of the EUREKA platform, which is to consider vehicles as active elements integrated in road traffic and part of a whole transport system, which should be possible to optimize in terms of safety and efficiency.
