Abstract
Characteristics of both optimal and adaptive multi-input/multi-output control techniques are discussed in this paper with particular emphasis on their applications to AC/DC power systems. Comparative studies of the optimal control strategy and the adaptive control technique for large disturbances show that the latter provides better damping in the system under study. This paper also reports on the establishment of a hardware laboratory facility including a scaled down AC/DC model and its use in the validation of controls
