Abstract
Wireless sensor n¿etworks (WSNs) constitute numerous microsensors that are energy limited. How to design the routing protocol to use energy with high efficiency is one of the most critical issues. In this paper, we propose a distributed singlehop-multihop switch (DSMS) routing protocol for wireless sensor networks. The main idea of DSMS is that the sensor area is divided into several rings of the same width and the nodes in the inner rings only bear forwarding task for certain percentage of network lifetime in order to guarantee energy balance. The advantage of DSMS is that the energy variance of nodes maintains at a rather low level during the network lifetime, which mean that the energy consumption is fairly balanced. The simulation results show that DSMS routing protocol could also extend network lifetime longer than either single-hop or multi-hop mode. DSMS routing protocol also has good scalability.
