Cam is a typical contour on non-circular grinding. The data of cam profiles could be illustrated based on taking the lift of a flat follower or roller as a function of cam rotation angle and converting it into the polar coordinates of the cam profile. According to working principle of camshaft grinding machine, the coordinates of cam profile and grinder can be calculated. This paper analyzes the conventional tool-offset methods and B-spline tool-offset method. A new algorithm for cam curve offsetting is proposed by using coordinates of cam profile and grinder. The method is applicable to outer cams. Experimental results showed that can be successfully machined.
