Abstract :
The concept of the intelligent organization and the intelligent information system (IS) has intuitive appeal and face validity as one considers the next generation of systems as `knowledge processing´ systems rather than `information processing´ systems. The paper adopts the metaphor of the intelligent organization as `manager´, positing that the concept requires refinement along three dimensions to become operational: knowledge, abilities (skills), and mission (purpose, goals). The paper explores the implications of the ability dimension of the intelligent organization for IS planning. The paper concludes with suggestions for research
