Abstract :
Concerns the learning of problem-solving methods by method generalization. The authors formalize the method generalization problem and present the computational approaches and techniques as well as the corresponding implementational issues for generalizing problem-solving methods. They investigate a restricted class of method generalization problems: given a concept hierarchy and a set of methods associated with individual concepts, the methods applicable to more general concepts are constructed from the methods associated with more specific concepts. A case study is presented which shows how methods for computing the properties of geometric entities in a hierarchy can be generalized to compute the properties of higher-level entities in the domain of Euclidean geometry
