Abstract
The need for research and development in the automobile industry is discussed, with particular reference to the experience at Volkswagen. Particular attention is given to the technical progress of VW/Audi automobiles, the drag coefficient of VW and Audi cars, the development of European emission laws, measures for fuel economy, the VW multifuel concept for methanol-gasoline operation, the storage characteristics of transportation energy, the electronic differential lock system, the Audi procon-ten system, and the VW Futura
