Abstract :
Present results obtained in studying a low earth orbit satellite system (LEO) for personal communications named `BOPSAT´, focusing on payload aspects. This work was carried in the frame of two complementary contracts performed for France Telecom CNET and the French Space Agency CNES. Two major drivers in designing such a satellite system are the maximization of compatibility with existing or planned ground cellular systems and the minimization of investment to set-up the system. After brief summary of mission assumptions which have been used in defining the BOPSAT satellites, the results of payload design trade-offs are presented. Required payload technologies are then reviewed. The paper concludes with views of resulting spacecraft layouts
