  • Abstract
The engineering management (EM) discipline is continuing with the explosive growth pattern that it has experienced since the mid-1970s. The most visible component of the growth is in research and education. The author investigates the characteristics of the field in those areas on the basis of a survey (see D.F. Kocaoglu, 1990) conducted as part of a longitudinal study. It is noted that; in the 1990s, one is observing the rise of the EM discipline, the emergence of crisp definitions of its scope and boundaries, and the strength of its unique characteristics. There is every indication that EM will gain prominence in the 1990s and will potentially be one of the leading disciplines in the 21st century
