Abstract

It is noted that the availability of commercial software to engineers makes it easy for students in engineering management programs to acquire an understanding concerning how simulation can be used for management decision-making. The author describes how a commercial software packages that is a risk analysis and simulation add-in to Lotus 1-2-3, can be used in the classroom environment to teach concepts of simulation to engineering management students. In the classes taught by the author, students (primarily working professionals) are encouraged to develop specific applications in their areas of expertise. Some applications developed by students are discussed, including litigation and insurance risk analysis, selecting an air compressor, and repairing or replacing a coal handling system
