Abstract :
A new algorithm for phase estimation has been developed at ALCATEL ESPACE. The idea is to perform all calculations in polar coordinates and to use the properties of the implementation in two´s complement arithmetic. Its main advantages are: no multiplications required, main functions easy to implement, and a low number of multiplications. Extra simulations have been performed at TELECOM Paris to evaluate the degradation as a function of several parameters: lengths of the bursts to be averaged, timing error, frequency deviation and implementation aspects (quantizing). Compared with the well-known Viterbi and Viterbi algorithm, this new algorithm is much simpler to implement with comparable performances
