Abstract
The BBC has been studying the use of SDH for internal routeing and external transmission of audio and video signals since the CCITT Recommendations appeared in the late 1980s. A prototype fibre-optic video routeing system was developed in RACE Project 1036 which used a combination of optical wavelength division multiplexing and electrical time-division multiplexing (WTDM). SDH was adopted as the multiplexing standard. Codecs were developed in RACE Project 1081 to allow PAL, HDTV and audio signals to be carried over this and other SDH networks. This paper describes this work and discusses the benefits SDH networks offer broadcasters
