Abstract :
Ultra-wideband (UWB) side-looking ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems are a promising tool for the detection of shallow buried objects, such as land-mines. The ultra-wideband nature of the radar system leads to high spatial resolution in the range direction; while the coherent nature of radar enables application of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing to obtain high resolution in the cross-range direction. The result is high resolution 2-dimensional images. Such images, however, do not indicate the elevation (third orthogonal direction) of objects. In this paper the authors examine the use of a dual antenna UWB-GPR system, together with application of an interferometric SAR processing technique to the pair of acquired radar images, to obtain such elevation estimates. Results of an experimental study are included
