Abstract :
Summary form only given. It is noted that in the large corporate environment computer workstation technical support involves issues of product selection, product compatibility, installation, maintenance, and end user support. There are also issues of hardware, software, and networks. New technology is introduced at a rapid pace. Sometimes new products are rushed to market without adequate quality, compatibility, or support. Older products are discontinued, and the installed base becomes a mix of versions and technologies. The user base contains the entire range from novice to expert. Benefits of managed support include economy of scale, concentration of skills, and standardized product offerings. Standard product offerings provide for product compatibility, standard training, and transferable computing products and skills between organizations and products. Other technical support areas requiring management include supplier technical support coordination and computer security issues
