Abstract :
In this paper, two types of plated through hole via structure are evaluated through modeling and measurement. Quasi-static and full-wave electromagnetic simulation methodologies will be compared with time and frequency domain measurements taken on a printed circuit board test structure created to isolate the effects of the plated through hole vias. The results will describe the usable bandwidth associated with equivalent circuit models derived from quasi-static electromagnetic simulations as the size of the structure being evaluated approaches one eighth of a wavelength. Correlation between the full-wave electromagnetic models and measurements of the plated through hole via structures will be shown over a frequency range of 100 MHz to 20 GHz.
