Abstract :
Sonar performance in shallow water is limited for the most part by bottom acoustic interactions. It had been assumed that the bottom may be treated as an elastic solid and that backscatter at shallow grazing angles was mainly caused by bottom roughness. Experimental results indicate that sandy sediments should be treated as a porous solid and that backscatter is mostly due to scattering from within the sediment volume
