Abstract
The effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) are investigated on the activity of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC) of rat myocardium in cellular signal transduction. EMP generator (40 kVmiddotm-1, 50 pulses, interphase at 2 min) was used to expose the SD rats to EMP. Radiotracing method was used to determine the activity of protein kinase C and protein kinase A in myocardial tissues. At 12h after the exposure, compared with normal control group, myocardial cytoplasm PKA activity of the EMP group was found to have significantly increased (P<0.01 ) whereas membrane PKA activity decreased significantly (P<0.01) and the total myocardial PKA activity dropped by 9.7%; myocardial cytoplasm PKC activity dropped (P<0.01) whereas membrane PKC activity rose significantly ( P<0.01 ) and the total myocardial PKC activity rose by 11.34%. On one hand, NEMP can reduce myocardial cytoplasm PKC activity but increase myocardial cytoplasm PKA. On the other hand, NEMP can increase membrane PKC activity but reduce membrane PKA activity. The results above suggest that NEMP can affect cellular signal transduction on the level of protein kinase
