Abstract
Contemporary silicon circuits can by the nature of increased integration perform complicated functions more economically. This, along with the higher life-cycle cost of energy, is changing the relative worth of these ingredients in the variable traffic load telephone plant. In situ economics of power has become a first order circuit design parameter. Future optimum systems design and deployment will require increased awareness, cooperation and sensitivity among the traditionally separate design camps of power, devices and systems.
