Abstract :
Computers are now being applied to communications systems which demand continuity of service such as message switching, toll collection, electronic PBX and ESS. AC power is required on a continuous uninterrupted basis to maintain this continuity. For the smaller computer systems this can be accomplished with single phase 60 Hz standard UPS systems described in this paper. Many larger computer systems require 60 Hz and 400 Hz 3 phase power. This can now be done by the use of 400 Hz static conversion equipment operating from the same battery as the 60 Hz UPS, thus providing continuous 60 and 400 Hz power in a reliable economical way. This paper describes such systems as well as various redundant systems. Consideration of lower cost options which in some cases can be used in lieu of a UPS system for communications computers are presented including dual feed sub-cycle static transfer switches, and solid state regulators.
