Abstract :
Presents a theory of uncertainty relevant to knowledge engineering which is consistent with and brings together the theories of probability and fuzzy sets. This theory is used in the AI language, Fril. This extends the logic programming form of knowledge representation and method of inference to allow for the inclusion of uncertainties of various forms including probabilistic knowledge and fuzzy incompleteness. Fril has application to such general areas of knowledge engineering as expert and decision support systems, evidential and case based reasoning, probabilistic and fuzzy causal nets, fuzzy control, fuzzy databases, intelligent manuals and fuzzy neural net theory
