Abstract :
The limitation of the complex Poynting theorem (CPT) has already been mentioned in many literatures. But its origin is not discovered yet. The authors find that the limitation originates from the fact that the complex Poynting theorem is derived from a necessary but insufficient condition. It is this insufficiency that makes the theorem correct mathematically but defective intrinsically. Two forms of the CPT, field as well as circuit, are analyzed
