  • Abstract
An interactive computer based learning (CBL) approach to the subject of phase diagrams is being developed and tested under the auspices of the University´s Teaching and Learning Technology Program. This learning method is self paced and individual, making teaching group size far less important with a resultant reduction in requirements on staff time. The project aims to develop a learning environment for the students rather than just an individual, one-off teaching package and it is envisaged that the initial work will be expanded on year by year, including possible development by student peer groups. By producing a pool of resource and allowing users to move through the information under their own control and at their own speed, they are not compelled to conform to the authors´ cognitive models and so students may learn in their own way. The approach taken in courseware design was that of open hypermedia (Microcosin). The authors discuss this approach and some preliminary results
