Abstract
Detection of buried IED using GPR is possible because the dielectric constant of the buried threat differs from that of the soil. However, this detection is challenging because the dielectric contrast is low for non-metallic mines and the unknown random variation of the ground surface adds significant clutter. This work presents a new dual band SAR processing approach for buried threat detection. High frequencies are used for rough soil reconstruction and low frequencies are used to penetrate the soil and detect anomalies. The combination of the two bands reduces the rough soil effect and thus enables detection of low dielectric contrast buried IEDs.
