  • Abstract
The freight transport industry already applies information technology and systems to provide better customer service levels and reduce costs. The next decade will see the rise of a number of freight mega-carriers able to implement global logistics solutions for shippers. In order to achieve this scale of operation, freight carriers will be relying as never before on information systems. The paper considers the factors underlying the growth of these mega-carriers and makes an initial assessment of whether some types of carrier have significant advantages in terms of their IT/IS skills
