Abstract
In this paper we review our results on soliton transmission over installed dispersion-shifted fiber. The cable quality is discussed as is the specifically developed optical source and receiver, respectively. The main discussion is on the 40 Gb/s soliton transmission results, including the first experimental observation of soliton robustness to polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) in a system experiment. In addition, the first single wavelength 80 Gb/s field transmission experiment is presented. Finally, we discuss the results of our long-term PMD measurements and measurements of local PMD accumulation along fibers
