Title :
The real engineering need for EMC
Author_Institution :

Abstract :
One general perception of EMC is that it is an additional approval cost to be incurred before products can be brought into service. Whilst much effort is made in bringing to our attention the penalties associated with failing to meet current legislation, little or no effort is made to educate industry in the reasons why they should consider EMC from business standpoints. In this paper, the author, by example, illustrates that by including a requirement to consider EMC in all aspects of product manufacture costs will be reduced over the lifetime of the product. The various elements of the manufacturing process are: specification, design, build and install. He illustrates the results of the failure to address EMC in the manufacturing process by a series of examples. The criteria for choosing the examples was cost to the manufacturer and/or end user as appropriate
