Abstract :
The deployment of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) systems in the wireless network has been used for soft handoff (SHO). This adds benefits to the wireless network such as increased capacity, improved operation management, and migration to the 3G/IP unified network. This article is two folds. First, the network architecture and the benefits of utilizing the ATM systems in the current wireless PCS service providers´ network are presented. Second the future of ATM systems, network architecture, and the emerging wireless backhaul access network are discussed
