Abstract
Computer based management systems are now widely used to monitor and control power and building services plant remotely. As the demand for such systems increases in a company so serious problems in managing the management systems are likely to result unless an integrated approach is taken at the outset. This paper describes how the concept of an integrated power and building services management system (P&BMS) was evolved in British Telecom and how this has been realised in practice. Based on a mix of commercial and in-house hardware developments the proposed system offers an immediate economic P&BMS solution for any size of building whilst future software enhancement will incorporate asset management, energy monitoring and targetting systems. Although primarily intended as a stand alone system for use by power and building services groups, facilities are provided which enable the system to form part of a fully integrated telecommunications network maintenance facility.
