Abstract
Because of the wide spread of digital imaging devices and the World Wide Web, we can easily obtain digital images of various kinds of real world scenes. Currently, however, classification/recognition of generic real world images is far from practical due to a diversity of real world scenes. To deal with such diversity, we have proposed gathering real world images from the World-Wide Web and using them as training images for image classification. We call this research project "Web image mining". Web images are as diverse as real world scene, since Web images are taken by a large number of people for various kinds of purpose. It is expected that diverse training images enable us to classify/recognition diverse real world images. In this paper, we describe our ongoing project, "Web image mining for generic image recognition".
